Sculpture Students Study Land & Environmental Art - And Make Their OWN!

Okay, this is really happening during the school day, and the students might never forget it. We start out by grabbing our jackets, and exiting the building to the great outdoors. We head down the senior parking lot steps, across a practice field, into the woods, and down the X-country trail that eventually brings us to a most beautiful rushing brook. We sit as a group and meditate for a few minutes, becoming attuned to the subtle sounds and smells - the very essence - of the woods, the water, and the crisp air brought on by autumn. This simplicity is the springboard for the creative work, but first we decide to lose something. After mediating with our eyes closed, we discuss one thing we would like to let go of - maybe something that is weighing us down, even if it is something as simple as an emotion that has no known origin. From the group, there were offerings of worries over being accepted to college, relationships, and other things we decide we will, as a group, just let go of - at the very least, for this moment. And then it is time to create! Just look at the beauty that transpired after the class studied the Land Art and Environmental Art movements, and took a field trip to Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY. We also viewed the film, Rivers and Tides, about the life and work of Andy Goldsworthy.
